I’m flying home out of Laguardia very early on Thanksgiving day, and I really don’t want to take a shitty car service or a cab, or alternatively take 2 trains and a bus, so I was thinking of using Uber or Lyft. I’ve never used either though, so I’m wondering how easily/quickly I could get a pickup at around 4am on Thursday morning?

The subway to the bus really isn’t that bad. Plus it will be empty at that hour. I suppose it depends on where you are coming from. Definitely check the prices on uber though, they work pretty well. Plus if it's your first ride, I think you get it free or something.

My only concern with taking the subway/busses is time, since they run less frequently early in the morning.

I have used Uber, and actually pretty recently. In NYC, the fast majority of Uber rides in NYC and the surrounding areas are actually taxi companies. No complaints about it, service is fast and drivers are polite.

There are Uber promotions to get a free first ride, or a certain dollar amount off, definitely worth looking into.

I’ll check it out for sure. About how long does it take to get a car in your experience?

The taxis arrived within 5-10 minutes max, and normally with something like a 4Runner or similar SUV.

Oh wow, I didn’t think they were that fast. Thanks for the info!

The rides I got were from a taxi company, and many of the drivers in between jobs are waiting around for the Uber notification.

Also, there’s no tipping the drivers when using Uber, you just give them a good rating in the app and good ratings cause that driver to get more jobs. Now, if you get a random person, I can’t really tell you what the experience will be, and I would be super wary of that, but the taxi drivers are very good, no trouble at all.

I’ve taken Ubers in the NYC area and they were very good. We got one outside the NJ Transit station at about 5AM and the guy showed up within a minute. Which was good because that place is fucking terrifying at night.
